Helene is projected to continue northwestward tonight with a turn toward the north-northwest on Wednesday before turning northeastward with increasing forward speed, the NHC said.
The storm is located 725 miles west of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands and about 1,515 miles south-southwest of the Azores, moving northwest at 12 mph.
The NHC's 11 a.m. advisory says that Helene is forecasted to become a major hurricane by Monday night.
It's too early to know the exact path of Florence, but forecasters said it could blow ashore by Thursday in the Carolinas and southern Virginia, a stretch of the U.S. East Coast that experts have identified as the most vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change. The storm was located roughly 1,170 miles east-southeast of the Cape Fear region, and remained a risky Category 4 storm.

As the storm advanced, Monday afternoon was a postcard-perfect day on Holden Beach with bright blue skies, placid puffy clouds and light breezes.

The hurricane center said the storm is expected to strengthen and speed up as it approaches the Carolina coast in the coming days.

A hurricane watch is now in effect for Guadeloupe, Martinique and Dominica, while a tropical storm watch is in effect for Antigua and Montserrat.
North Carolina's governor issued what he called a first-of-its-kind mandatory evacuation order for North Carolina's fragile barrier islands from one end of the coast to the other. "Whether it is a tropical storm, a tropical storm watch, or a hurricane watch or a hurricane warning, we must treat all of them the same way".

As it nears the U.S. Atlantic shore, Florence will also benefit from "very warm" sea surface temperatures of up to 85 degrees, the National Hurricane Center said.
"Life-threatening freshwater flooding is likely from a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event, which may extend inland over the Carolinas and Mid Atlantic for hundreds of miles as Florence is expected to slow down as it approaches the coast and moves inland".
Hurricane Helene is way out over the open Atlantic and heading northward into more open waters.
Maximum sustained winds were nearly 85 miles per hour Monday morning, the hurricane center said.
The US Navy said it was sending almost 30 ships from coastal Virginia out of port to ride out the storm.
Should Hurricane Isaac begin to grow, islands beyond the Lesser Antilles such as Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic will brace themselves for the possibility of weathering another storm.
