Hundreds of US newspapers have run editorials denouncing US President Donald Trump's attacks on media, in a coordinated effort to promote press freedom. At least 343 publications agreed to publish editorials Thursday against what the Globe calls Trump's "dirty war against the free press", reports the Guardian.
Trump is sensitive about his media coverage and says the press is "fake" and the "enemy of the people".
In a second tweet, Trump singled out The Boston Globe, which published a compilation of the editorials from the various media outlets across the country, defending freedom of the press.
Free press advocates argue that Trump's attacks threaten the role of the news media as a check against abuse of power in government and imperil the constitutional First Amendment guarantee of freedom of the press.
The New York Times wrote: "If you haven't already, please subscribe to your local papers", it said. Chuck Schumer, the body unanimously passed a resolution condemning "attacks on the institution of the free press".

A month after taking the oath of office, Trump labelled the news media "the enemy of the American people".
"The people who read editorials don't need to be convinced", he said.
The San Francisco Chronicle will not be participating in Thursday's joint effort.

Not all newspapers have taken part in the editorial response, however.
