China's finance ministry unveiled new sets of additional tariffs on 5,207 goods imported from the United States, ranging from five to 25 per cent.
The duties, initially announced last month, would not be imposed until after a period of public comment. The president is said to have dismissed the initial proposal as "weak".
Washington touted its initial tariffs as being carefully constructed to avoid having a big impact on US consumers and companies, but the expansion of the tariff lists has drawn in more goods that can not be imported from outside China.
China, which has accused the United States of bullying, again vowed to retaliate if Trump proceeds with the measures, warning that pressure tactics would fail. The United States is far and away the most popular place for such investment, given the size and liquidity of markets for US government debt and policies that are very friendly to foreign investors other financial assets and real estate.
In Beijing, a foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang, said Beijing was open to dialogue but gave no indication about the status of possible negotiations.
Weather to bring renewed fire danger to Northern California
Braden Varney, 36, was working alone overnight July 14 fighting the wildfire while his assistant went to get a new hydraulic hose. The Redding fire has grown to 206 square miles (533-square-kilometer) and has destroyed 1,060 homes and many other structures.
China has already filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization about the US proposal for tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods.
"Each tariff escalation leads to further retaliatory action from China - ultimately inflicting even more harm on American businesses, workers, farmers, ranchers, and consumers".
Holding an open door to talks while threatening worse consequences represents yet another increase in tension in the months-long standoff between the world's two largest economies over commerce. "Unilateral threats and pressure will only be counterproductive".
China could retaliate by imposing more tariffs of its own, as well as increasing scrutiny and regulation of American businesses seeking to operate in China and encouraging boycotts of US goods.

For the Trump administration, the possible bulk export of soybean to Europe has eased some pressure as the United States provides subsidies worth $12 billion for farmers, even though the hold on tariffs on European cars and auto parts while negotiating the best deal for a "zero-tariff" trade regime will increase the pressure on the U.S. automobile sector.
This would include seafood products such as Pacific cod, Alaska pollock, shrimp, salmon and tilapia products.
It's not as if the president doesn't have advisors capable of explaining the dangers of too much foreign investment-economist and Trump Trade guru Peter Navarro wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal previous year warning that at our current rate "foreigners will eventually own so much of the USA that Americans will wind up working longer hours just to eat and to service the debt".
Still, it is hard for the U.S. and the European Union to reach a tangible agreement to "work together toward zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies on non-auto industrial goods", as Trump said, because of the contradictory ideas and opinions on the two sides. "The cost increases will be passed on to customers, so it will affect most Americans pocketbooks".
The move is being fuelled by deep frustration within the Trump administration over its unsuccessful attempts to press China to change its trade practices, including improperly obtaining American intellectual property.
