The stakes in this election are particularly high as the new president is the first to enjoy enhanced powers under a new constitution agreed in an April 2017 referendum strongly backed by Erdogan.
While opposition leaders see Erdogan's reforms as a power-grab, Erdogan sees them as the will of the people.
Erdogan won 52.5 percent in the presidential poll while Ince, of the secular Republican People's Party (CHP), was at 31.5 percent, state-run Anadolu news agency said, based on a 99 percent vote count. The post of the prime minister is also set to be abolished.

The CHP, which placed a monitor at each polling station, said that its own early count was radically different, showing Erdogan at 47 percent and Ince around 40 percent.
Celebrations erupted in the Kurdish-majority city of Diyarbakir, with people letting off fireworks into the sky, AFP correspondents said.
