"Splitting California into three new states will triple the amount of special interests, lobbyists, politicians and bureaucracy", Maviglio said in an email.
In northernmost parts of California, rebellious souls have been flirting since 1941 with the idea of their own state called "Jefferson", which would mesh with the southern counties of Oregon.
- "Southern California" would comprise 12 counties, including Fresno, Kern, Orange and San Diego counties.
As outlined in the initiative, the new state of California would consist of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties.
Measure to split California into 3 states qualifies for November ballot
Would it require approval by other government bodies?
Turning one state into three would create four new USA senators, a move that would significantly boost Californians' influence in Washington. The California Legislature might also need to sign off, according to review of the measure by the Legislative Analyst's Office.
Cal3provides has mapped out a series of statistics regarding how the Golden State would be split up. The measure became eligible for the general election almost two months after Cal 3, the group behind the initiative, said it turned in more than 600,000 signatures to the Secretary of State.
Kim Jong-un arrives in Singapore for summit with Trump
While Trump spoke positively about his upcoming meeting with Kim, he was vague on the details of what they might actually achieve. USA and North Korean officials are set to meet Monday morning in Singapore to make final preparations for Tuesday's meeting.
There also is a sizable debate about whether such a sweeping change can be created through a ballot initiative - that is, whether it rises to the level of a "revision" of the California Constitution, which can only be instigated by the Legislature or by a formal constitutional convention.
President Donald Trump would then be required to sign that legislation.
Cal 3 sees this as an advantage: "Electoral College votes will be divided among the new states based on population, roughly the same as they are apportioned today, but with the additional recognition that comes with more direct and proportional influence over the Electoral College totals".
"The California state government isn't too big to fail, because it is already failing its citizens in so many crucial ways", Grande said.

His statement follows a report from the New York Times, which criticized the White House for lacking a scientific advisory team. Nam said Seoul welcomed the news that President Trump had "sufficiently expressed" his trust in Kim.
The initiative's main supporter is Tim Draper, a billionaire and venture capitalist. Recently, Draper has been an outspoken advocate for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
How much money will he spend to pass it?
This is how California would be split into three states if the Cal 3 initiative becomes reality. State filings show he paid consultants and law firms almost $560,000 a year ago for work related to the proposal.
"The unanimous support for CAL 3 from all 58 of California's counties to reach this unprecedented milestone in the legislative process is the signal that across California, we are united behind CAL 3 to create a brighter future for everyone", Draper said in a statement in April after the signatures were collected.
