Pompeo released a statement on the eve of the anniversary on Monday of the June 4, 1989, suppression of demonstrations that also called on China to release those who have been jailed for their efforts to keep the memory of the crackdown alive.
The bloody crackdown on pro-democracy Chinese student protestors at Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, remains one of the most censored political taboos in China today, as the Chinese regime has consistently downplayed the People's Liberation Army's bloody "cleansing" of Beijing streets and Tiananmen Square that night.
Speaking at Dialogue China's launch event on Monday morning, Carl Gershman, president of the USA -funded National Endowment for Democracy, said that the Chinese Communist Party needs a "rewrite of history" in order for its regime to survive, of which the coverup of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre is a prime example.
Nearly three decades ago, hundreds if not thousands of Chinese students were gunned down in Beijing by government soldiers for holding peaceful pro-democracy protests which had lasted many weeks.

"We are here to condemn China's Communist Party for slaughtering its people", sociology professor and a leader of the pro-democracy Occupy Central movement Chan Kin-man said.
