New Hanover County Schools have joined a handful of other districts across the state that have chose to close on May 16, the day thousands of teachers are rallying in Raleigh.
More than 10 public school systems across North Carolina have chosen to close school that day because of teacher absences exceeding the number of available substitutes.
The announcement was met with some displeasure among board members. About 3,000 teachers from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are expected to attend, but page organizer Kevin Poirier said only about 400 will be able to ride on the buses due to the limited capacity.

The absences come as teachers throughout the state are taking part in the 'March for Students and Rally for Respect.
"We have approximately 2,000 teachers requesting leave so we do have to close schools", said Guilford County Schools Superintendent Sharon Contreras.
Breakfast from 8:30 a.m.to 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. will be provided at the following schools: Williams, Bradley Creek, Wrightsboro, Williston, Virgo, and Sunset Park. The teachers will lobby state lawmakers on the opening day of the North Carolina General Assembly in an effort to win better pay and working conditions. The teacher rally is being organized by the state's association of educators. They point to data from education reform group EdChoice showing that nationwide, per-pupil funding adjusted for inflation rose 27 percent between 1992 and 2014 as schools added ranks of nonteaching support staff. "We will be pushing for action and holding those accountable who are not on the side of our kids with the ultimate goal of electing pro-public education leaders in the North Carolina General Assembly".

Advanced Placement exams scheduled for May 16th will still be administered that day.
