The plight of Rohingya people in Rakhine state has received much global attention, following an exodus of more than 700,000 people to neighbouring Bangladesh after a military crackdown last August. More than 750,000 Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar since October 2016, when Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army militants launched coordinated attacks on police outposts.
The recent spasm of violence in Myanmar began when Rohingya insurgents staged a series of attacks on August 25 on about 30 security outposts and other targets.
Bangladesh and Myanmar signed a bilateral agreement last November that recognised the need for a long-lasting and comprehensive solution to the crisis and the voluntary return of refugees under worldwide law.
Still, the Security Council envoys flew over villages burned and razed by the Myanmar military, which destroyed evidence of what happened there and allowed the government to claim the land as its own.

Security Council delegation wrapped up its visits to Bangladesh and Myanmar on Tuesday, and expressed hope that refugees from the conflict-stricken Rakhine state in Myanmar could return quickly and safely to their homes, a spokesman said.

Al-Otaibi stressed the necessity of United Nations involvement in the repatriation process and negotiations between Myanmar and the United Nations refugee agency on potential cooperation.
