Lee Correctional Institution is located in the Town of Bishopville in Lee County, and is a Level 3 facility, meaning it houses some of the most violent offenders in the SC prison system.
The South Carolina Department of Corrections has released the identity of the seven inmates killed following an incident at Lee Correctional, Sunday evening.
With 12 officers reportedly on duty at the time of the incident, Stirling says they were waiting to safely enter the prison with a large enough force. The official cause of death will not be determined until after the autopsies.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating what happened at the maximum-security prison about 60 miles northeast of Columbia.

In a press conference on Monday, Stirling said the altercation appeared to stem from gang-related conflict over territory, contraband and cell phones.
