Stressing on his point about policy paralysis during the previous regimes, PM highlighted the issue of the delay in providing bullet proof jackets to army soldiers,"The issue of providingbullet-prooff jackets to Indian soldiers was kept hanging for years. On defence manufacturing licenses, on defence offsets, on defence exports clearances, on Foreign Direct Investment in defence manufacturing, and on reforming our defence procurement, we have taken many steps", said PM Modi. India is looking at tapping new and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for its defence force and is betting on its strength in the information technology domain.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who inaugurated the DefExpo on Thursday, said new and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are the most important determinants of defensive and offensive capabilities and India, with its leadership in the information technology domain, would strive to use this technology to its advantage. "Two defence corridors (one in Tamil Nadu, the other in Uttar Pradesh) will increase economic development and the growth of the defence industrial base".
While delivering speech in front of foreign delegates and representatives of different companies, Modi told that Government of India is concern about development of Indigenisation of defence products and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country will play a major role in this regard.
Quoting former president APJ Abdul Kalam, the Prime Minister said, Kalam asked us to dream, dream and dream. "These will utilize defence manufacturing ecosystems in the regions and further build upon it", PM Narendra Modi added.

This is the first exhibition of this scale which is aimed at transforming India into a hub for manufacturing military equipment and achieve a turnover of Rs 1,70,000 crore in military goods and services by 2025. "In less than four years, we have issued 794 more export permissions, for a total value of over $1.3 billion".
In 2014 Defence export permissions stood at 118 worth about 577 million United States dollars.
India has purchased more than $15 billion worth of USA defence equipment in the past and companies there were cooperating closely with the Indian armed services to deploy these systems to enhance military capabilities and improve interoperability.
"In the weeks ahead, we will undertake extensive consultations with all stakeholders, including both Indian and foreign companies, about our defence production and defence procurement policy space".
At the inaugural function, the Prime Minister also launched IDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), a portal for startups to deal with the defence production department.
