Australian steel and aluminium account for just a small percentage of the USA import market, but Canberra has warned the tariffs would distort trade and lead to job losses.
Following Mr Trump's lead in the Twittersphere, Malcolm Turnbull showed his gratitude for the allegiance.
On Thursday, Trump approved a plan to levy a 25 percent tariff on steel and 10 percent on aluminum.
"Australia will be among the biggest losers from a United States inspired rise in global protectionism", he said.
Turnbull went a step further, telling reporters in South Australia on Saturday that he was "very pleased the president was able to confirm that he would not have to impose tariffs on Australian steel and aluminium".
