Last month, Nieto called off a planned trip to the White House to meet with Trump after Trump again pressed during a phone call that Mexico pay for the wall. Kushner was stripped of his top security clearance recently, according to multiple sources.
The NAFTA renegotiation process, uncertainty about legislation relating to young US immigrants known as dreamers and Trump's tendency to use Twitter to voice his opinion on contentious bilateral issues such as drug trafficking have further strained the relationship between Mexico and the U.S.
