The Kansas Highway Patrol tweeted, "We extend our thoughts and our honest condolences to the Clinton, Missouri Police Department, as well as the family and friends of Officer Christopher Morton, who was shot and killed last night".
Officers found James E. Waters, 37, of Clinton, dead inside a home in Clinton Wednesday morning.
One Clinton, Missouri police officer is dead and two others injured after a gunman opened fire as authorities responded to a 911 call at a home about 75 miles outside of Kansas City.
The three officers went inside the house to "apprehend the suspect" and were struck by gunfire inside.

The incident occurred seven months to the day after Officer Gary Michael was shot to death during a traffic stop in Clinton. "We are praying and ask that each of you pray for all involved and especially for the family of the officer who was killed in the line of duty this evening". Officer Nicholas Kasper was also treated for gunshot wounds and was released from the hospital earlier Wednesday.
"It's hard to put it in words what you go through when you have an officer killed in the line of duty", Lowe said Tuesday night.
Shortly after their arrival Lowe says the officers were shot at by the suspect from inside the residence.

Friends described Morton as an officer and friend who had a big heart, and who was always willing to help others.
The patrol said Morton was a full-time Clinton officer from February 2015 through January 2017, when he temporarily became a reserve officer. Numerous agencies assisted including Clinton PD, Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
