A tanker has collided with a bulk carrier in the East China Sea, leaving 32, the entire tanker crew, missing.
An operation was underway to rescue the crew members, believed to be 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis, according to the Xinhua news agency.
The incident occurred late on Saturday about 160 nautical miles off the coast near Shanghai and the mouth of the Yangtze River Delta.
The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tonnes (or almost one million barrels) of condensate, a type of ultra-light oil, according to Chinese authorities. That is equivalent to just under one million barrels, worth about US$60 million (RM239.6), based on global crude oil prices.
Chinese state media carried pictures of the tanker on fire with large plumes of smoke.
Chinese officials dispatched several maritime police vessels, two rescue boats, and three professional cleaning ships to the area.
The Chinese vessel had been damaged but "the safety of the ship was not jeopardized" and all its 21 Chinese crew had been rescued, officials from the Ministry of Transport said.Читайте также: County braces for possible snow, freezing rain
Oil tanker SANCHI, owned by an Iranian shipping company, collided with a cargo ship.
That was nearly twice the size of the Exxon Valdez spill, which ravaged Alaska's coast in 1989.
Reuters ship tracking data shows Sanchi was built in 2008 and was managed by the National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC).
The incident also marked the first major maritime incident involving an Iranian tanker since the lifting of worldwide sanctions against Iran in January 2016. Its registered owner is Bright Shipping Ltd.
Iran's oil ministry has confirmed that at least 30 Iranian citizens were missing in oil tanker incident.
"We have no information on their fate", he said.
The second vessel was Hong Kong-flagged cargo ship carrying 64,000 tonnes of grain, AFP reported.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
