The governors of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia declared states of emergency, warning residents to be aware of icy roads and freezing temperatures.
A strong winter storm may blast parts of northern Florida and southeast Georgia with ice and snow and produce a heavy snowfall in SC.
"What is being dubbed a "Bomb-Cyclone" on social media actually has a more scientific name, bombogenesis", ABC7 forecaster Mackenzie Bart explained.
But what does that mean?
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) defines bombogenesis as occurring when a mid-latitude storm that experiences at least a 24 millibar drop in air pressure within a 24-hour period.Читайте также: Unemployment drops to lowest rate in more than 40 years
Low pressure will take shape east of Florida during the day Wednesday and then rapidly strengthen as it lifts north to a position off the New England coast on Thursday and into the Canadian maritimes Thursday night. The real-world impact is a cold-core winter storm that resembles a tropical cyclone with regard to barometric pressure, wind speed, and precipitation, if not in temperature.
A massive winter storm known as a "bomb cyclone" will smash into the US East Coast this week. Now, parts of Northern Florida are under a winter storm watch for the first time in four years. In Charleston, South Carolina, one to three inches of snow and sleet are expected.
Baltimore and Washington could receive snowfall dependent on the storm's path, and so could Philadelphia and New York City, but as much as 4 to 8 inches could fall between Atlantic City and eastern Long Island. The difference between the two air masses helps to strengthen the storm system. The National Weather Service reported snow fell in the city Wednesday morning.
Thursday morning through late evening, wind gusts are likely to reach over 50 miles per hour along the coastline.
"There is very high confidence on the general track and intensity of this storm as it heads from off the mid-Atlantic Coast toward Nova Scotia, which will get a direct hit of heavy snow and high wind".При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
