The head of the organization that stages the Miss America beauty pageant resigned on Saturday after a report this week alleging that emails he had sent were derogatory toward past winners. But he said it was wrong.
In its own statement Thursday night, the Miss America Organization said that Haskell, who earns $500,000 a year as CEO, had apologized to the board for his comments. "Although this bad situation was not caused or driven by me, in light of recent events and new developments, I am no longer willing to continue in my capacity as president and earlier today offered my resignation to the MAO Board of Directors".
Following the death of another Miss America, a former writer on the show wrote that he wished it had been 1998 victor Kate Shindle instead.
Haskell's resignation is effective immediately, while Randle and Weidner will remain for a few weeks to help with a leadership transition.
Blaze at London Zoo as 70 firefighters tackle flames
Saturday, and staff who live on the site immediately started moving animals to safety, officials said. London Fire Brigade station manager David George said the cause of the fire hasn't been established.
ABC News obtained a full statement from Randle on Saturday that said his inappropriate response to an email about the appearance of 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan came several months before he worked at the Atlantic City-based organization.
The organisation announced the resignations a day after dozens of former Miss Americas signed a petition calling on the group's leadership to step down.
Dick Clark Productions told the AP news agency it had cut its ties with the organisation after the emails' publication, saying it found their content "appalling".

Since then, headlines about her joining the Royal family and moving to London can be seen nearly anywhere. But when people saw the brooch she made a decision to wear to the event, tongues started wagging.
Haskell, in a statement accompanying his suspension on Friday, said the emails cited by the Huffington Post were "conveniently edited".
The writer responded by questioning whether he and Haskell were part of a tiny group of people who had not had sex with Hagan.
Also on Saturday, one of the main recipients of fundraising from the Miss America Organization said it was reviewing its association with Miss America.
With the exception of a stay in Las Vegas from 2006 to 2013, the Miss America Pageant has been a staple of Atlantic City, N.J., for decades with the traditional "Show Us Your Shoes" parade along the boardwalk where contestants show footwear representative of their states.
