Papa John's founder and CEO John Schnatter will step down as CEO next month only weeks after making controversial statements about National Football League players and their right to protest.
Schnatter offered praise for Ritchie, saying "I am so proud of Steve...we couldn't have a more proven leader to guide Papa John's through its next stage of growth". Schnatter is shifting to a role as chairman of the company, where he "will continue to champion the core principles that led to recognition as the industry leader in product quality and customer satisfaction", Papa John's said.
The comments drew praise from white supremacists and the company apologized two weeks later. But he recently ran into controversy when he blamed NFL players' mass move to drop to one knee during the playing of the national anthem as affecting his company's sales.

Schnatter, 56, founded Papa John's more than 30 years ago, turning a broom closet at his father's bar into a pizza spot. "We do not want these individuals or groups to buy our pizza", the company said following the post on Papa John's being the official pizza of the alt-right.
Papa John's, which lays claim to being the nation's third-largest pizza chain, could not be reached immediately for comment. It's not the first time Schnatter has stepped down. Schnatter announced his decision when the market closed. He took a break from being CEO between 2005 and 2008.
The backlash was swift, with many promising to boycott Papa John's in response to Schnatter's comments.
