Black Friday boost for retail sales

Spending in terms of cash was 4.7% higher.

November's seeming strength has merely been a reflection of consumer bringing forward purchases they otherwise would have made in December or January to November, due to the discounts available on Black Friday, Pantheon said.

That led economists to suggest the rise in sales may be temporary: Samuel Tombs, chief United Kingdom economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the surge does "not signal broader consumer strength".

Nevertheless, the latest figures could provide reassurance to the country's central bank, the Bank of England, which increased its interest rates for just the first time in more than a decade in November and will publish it most recent rate decision Friday at noon.

Kallum Pickering, an economist with Berenberg Bank, said the figures added to signs from factories that Britain's economy was picking up a bit of speed in late 2017 and he expected that momentum to continue into 2018.

Elizabeth Warren Says Trump Is Guilty Of 'Slut' Shaming
Pete King Tuesday said President Donald Trump should keep himself above political infighting after the president slammed Sen. She said it is not sexist because the president has used the language in reference to male and female lawmakers.

Electrical household appliances were a key factor in boosting sales. Economists said the sales growth would help boost GDP growth in the final three months of the year.

The ONS survey period ended on November 25, the day after Black Friday.

Looking at the past three months as a whole, which smoothes out monthly volatility, the picture is gloomier.

Sales were forecast to grow marginally by 0.4 percent after expanding 0.5 percent in October.

Official data earlier this week showed that consumer price inflation rose to its highest in almost six years at 3.1 percent in November, while the number of people in work fell for a second consecutive month.

Seahawks players avoid suspensions for late-game mayhem in Jacksonville
Right tackle Germain Ifedi committed four penalties (one was declined) to extend his National Football League lead. Wright suffered a concussion, while Wagner reinjured the hamstring that has been bothering him for several weeks.

The ONS said that the quantity of food bought in November fell by 0.1% compared to the same month a year ago.

ONS admitted that its seasonal adjustment may not fully account for a longer Black Friday sales period, with this set of data covering the period up to 25 November, while Cyber Monday sales from 27 November will be included in the next set of figures.

But home furnishings company Carpetright cut forecasts after warning of fragile consumer confidence.

Retail sales rose 1.6 percent from a year earlier in November.

Jets QB Josh McCown suffers broken hand, season up in air
Midway through the quarter, fullback Andy Janovich rushed 1 yard for Denver's second touchdown and the game's dagger. The Jets are still searching for a long-term solution at quarterback, so McCown was filling more of a bridge role.
