Madhya Pradesh, which has the fifth highest population in the country, has again earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of rape cases registered among all States a year ago. Madhya Pradesh alone accounted for 4882 of these cases, followed closely by Uttar Pradesh, which reported 4,816 rape cases and Maharashtra with 4,189 cases.
Uttar Pradesh, which was ruled by Samajwadi Party in 2016, recorded 9.5% of the total crimes registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections in the country. The NCRB said the State did not register a single acid attack or an attempt to attack with acid in 2016.
