Brexit Secretary David Davis unveiled plans for the UK's divorce deal to be written into law, meaning both MPs and peers will be afforded a vote on the agreement between London and Brussels.
British MPs returned to the House of Commons today after a brief parliamentary recess to what promises to be a bruising battle over a crucial Brexit legislation transferring existing European Union laws to Britain.
"This also means that Parliament will be given time to debate, scrutinise and vote on the final agreement we strike with the EU".
Her Brexit minister, David Davis, tried to head off some of that rebellion by offering the Commons a vote on the final Brexit deal.

The government said it wants an implementation period of around two years after Brexit to stop an economically damaging "cliff-edge" - but insists Britain will be fully out of the EU.
David Davis also said if the United Kingdom and European Union can't agree a withdrawal deal, there will simply be no withdrawal deal bill; the United Kingdom is still on track to leave the European Union whether the deal is approved or not.
Davis said once the terms of Britain's exit, including any financial settlements, any transition deal and agreement on citizen rights, have been drawn up with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, this will have a specific piece of primary legislation that can be debated, amended and voted on by MPs.
The government said it would ensure legal certainty when Britain leaves the bloc in March 2019.

The Brexit date of March 29, 2019 is also set to be enshrined in law as part of the withdrawal bill, in a move announced by May last week.

Meanwhile, former Tory constitution minister John Penrose welcomed the Government's stronger pledge on a parliamentary vote, but expressed continuing concerns over the use of so-called "Henry VIII powers" as provided by the EU Withdrawal Bill.
However, the bid to head off opposition from restive lawmakers was met with criticism as MPs claimed the vote would be meaningless and give them little time to consider any eventual Brexit deal.
