The iPhone maker is working on a new AR headset that could become available as soon as 2020, according to a report Wednesday from Bloomberg. Citing sources "familiar with the situation", the report notes that this headset will feature a brand new display and run on a new chip and fresh operating system instead of the iOS mobile platform that now runs ARKit. The headset will have its own display and use a custom system-on-a-chip, just like the Apple Watch now does.
This OS will be based on iOS and comes after Apple also produced bespoke operating systems for Apple TV (tvOS) and Apple Watches (watchOS). This summer, it introduced ARKit, a software development kit that lets developers create AR apps for iPhones and iPads. Cook believes that augmented reality will be able to change the current use of technology. "As such, this is why so many players like Apple, Google, and Facebook, are looking very closely at augmented reality".
In an earnings call last week, Cook hinted that a big augmented reality push could be coming from his company and said that new technologies "will transform the way you work, play, connect, and learn".
US, South Korea, Australia Hold East China Sea Navy Drills
It was not pleasant for them, was it? Recent drills over South Korea by two U.S. strategic bombers have further raised tensions. North Korea has called Thae "human scum" and accused him of embezzling government money and committing other crimes.
Bloomberg's report claims that Apple is now using HTC's Vive virtual reality headsets to test out all of its AR-related experiments. Microsoft's HoloLens, for instance, can be used in the enterprise to aid people in their jobs. It is led by Mike Rockwell, who previously was the engineering boss at Dolby Labs.
It seems that Apple began assembling a team to work on AR-related projects a couple of years ago, Bloomberg reported in March. Multiple challenges remain unsolved, including designing a wireless device that can display AR visuals for long enough without depleting the battery.
United Kingdom minister apologizes for unauthorized meetings with Israeli officials
The Foreign Office, it said, was "clear that United Kingdom interests were not damaged or affected by the meetings on this visit". On Tuesday No.10 confirmed Patel had suggested the United Kingdom send aid money to the Israeli army in the Golan Heights.
It is not yet known how users will control or interact with the AR projections, but Apple is reportedly experimenting with head gestures, Gear VR-style touch panel input, and Siri voice commands, among others. For launch apps, engineers are said to be already prototyping a range of applications that involves mapping, texting, holding virtual meetings and watching 360-degree videos.
As promising as an AR headset sounds, it's also important to remember that Apple could scrap such plans at any time.
